How To Crochet a Cat – Learn the US Terms

Before starting any crochet cat Christmas project, it is important to understand the abbreviations used in the patterns.

These short forms serve as a universal language for crocheters, making instructions concise and easier to follow.

Even simple crochet cat stuff, like small ornaments or toys, relies on these symbols to describe the stitch types, repeats, and directions.

Here are some of the most common us terms that you’ll see in most of these free cat crochet patterns:

  • ch: chain stitch
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: increase
  • dec: decrease
  • MR: magic ring (or magic circle)
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • rnd(s): round(s)
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together
  • hdc2tog: half double crochet 2 stitches together
  • dc2tog: double crochet 2 stitches together
  • tr2tog: treble crochet 2 stitches together

This is not a comprehensive list by any stretch. We have done our best to explain the abbreviations used in this guide under the instruction section.

1. DIY Crochet Cat Elf Hat

What You Need

  • Worsted or bulky weight yarn
  • H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • 2-inch pom-pom maker (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start with green yarn and crochet a 36-stitch brim using foundation half double crochet (fhdc). Join it into a circle and then work one more round of hdc.
  2. Switch to your red yarn. From this point on, just alternate your colors (red and white) with every new row.
  3. To create the ear holes, work 6 hdc, chain 6 (while skipping 6 stitches), work 12 hdc, chain 6 (again skipping 6 stitches), and finish with 6 hdc.
  4. Begin to taper the hat. Work one full decrease round by repeating [hdc 4, decrease].
  5. Continue shaping the hat by working another decrease round, this time repeating [hdc 3, decrease].
  6. Keep making the hat narrower with two more decrease rounds: first [hdc 2, decrease], and then [hdc 1, decrease].
  7. Work the final few rounds evenly (1 hdc in each stitch) to create the long, pointed tip. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
  8. Make a 2-inch pom-pom using the same green yarn from the brim, sew it securely to the very top of the hat.
  9. Finally, make two ties. For each one, chain 43 with green yarn and work one hdc in each chain. Sew these ties directly below the ear holes.

2. Crochet Cat Christmas Hat DIY

What You Need

Instructions

  1. Begin the hat’s tip with red yarn, make a magic ring with 3 single crochet (sc) stitches. In the next round, work 2 sc in each stitch. This doubles the stitch count to 6 stitches total.
  2. Continue making the cone shape by working one plain round (1 sc in each stitch) followed by one increase round.
  3. Repeat this alternating pattern until the base of the hat grows to 36 stitches wide.
  4. To create the ear holes, work a few sc stitches, then chain 12 and skip 12 stitches. Work a few more sc stitches, then chain 12 and skip 12 again.
  5. Switch to your white yarn to start the brim. Work one round of single crochet, making sure to place 12 sc stitches right into each of the chain-12 spaces.
  6. Create the fluffy trim by working three rounds of alternating puff stitches and slip stitches.
  7. Fasten off and weave in all your loose ends. Make a fluffy white pom-pom and sew it securely to the pointed tip of the hat.
  8. This hat is intended for photos, so always supervise your cat while they are wearing it and remove it after a short time.

3. Ragdoll Christmas Tree Cat Crochet Ornament

What You Need

Instructions

  1. First, make the two cat panels. With your grey yarn, chain 11. Increase in the 2nd chain from the hook, single crochet (sc) across the next 8 stitches, and then increase again in the last stitch. Chain 1 and turn.
  2. Work back and forth in rows, increasing or decreasing as the pattern indicates. The piece widens to about 14 stitches, then tapers back down as you get near the ears.
  3. For the ears, crochet partway across the top of the head, then decrease each row to form one triangular ear. Fasten off, skip two stitches, and repeat that process for the second ear.
  4. Make the second panel using the same instructions. When both panels are complete, weave in all the ends. Choose one panel as the front and add the facial features.
  5. Place safety eyes or embroider crochet eyes between rows 21 and 22, spacing them about four stitches apart.
  6. Stitch the nose between and slightly below the eyes using pink yarn. Add optional eyelashes with black thread if you like.
  7. Stack the two panels together. Join them with grey yarn by single crocheting evenly around the outer edge, working through both layers.
  8. As you work around, stuff the cat lightly with fiberfill. It’s easiest to begin with the head, then stuff the body. Continue stuffing, then close the final stitches and fasten off securely.
  9. For the scarf, use red yarn. Chain about 40, then sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and all the way across. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  10. To make the white pompoms, create a magic ring and make 4 sc inside. Work one more round of 4 sc, then sew the top closed. Attach one pompom to each end of the scarf.
  11. Tie the scarf loosely around the cat’s neck or just sew it in place.
  12. You can then add a hanging loop of yarn to the top if you’re making a tree ornament. For a gift card pocket, just crochet a small rectangle and sew it onto the back panel, leaving the top open.

4. Holly Leaf Cat Collar for Christmas

What You Need

Instructions

  1. Start the first green leaf by chaining 4, then work 4 half double crochet (hdc) stitches right into the very first chain.
  2. Continue working in rows, turning after each one. Work one ‘increase’ row (placing 2 hdc in some stitches), followed by one ‘even’ row (1 hdc in each stitch).
  3. Repeat this increase/even pattern twice more. This grows the leaf from 8 stitches to 12, and finally to 16 stitches wide.
  4. Create the pointy holly edge by working a special row of clusters. These clusters are made with hdc, double crochet (dc), and a ‘picot’ (chain 4, slip stitch back) for the point.
  5. After finishing the pointy edge, do not cut the yarn. Immediately begin working a border of single crochet (sc) stitches down the side of the leaf.
  6. When you get to the starting point, work 3 sc stitches into the center hole (this creates the hole for the tie). Then, continue the sc border up the other side and fasten off.
  7. Follow these same steps to make a second, identical leaf.
  8. To form the collar, join your green yarn to a top corner of one leaf, and hdc across the top. Chain a long section to fit loosely around your cat’s neck, then attach it to the second leaf and hdc across its top.
  9. Work two more rows of hdc across the entire collar (both leaves and the chain). Taper the ends by working a decrease at the very beginning and end of these two rows.
  10. To make the berries, use red yarn to crochet a tiny ball. Start with a magic ring, increase, work one round even, then decrease. Add a tiny bit of stuffing before sewing the hole closed.
  11. Finally, make a long, thin chain with your red yarn. Sew one berry securely to each end. Thread this tie through the holes at the bottom of the holly leaves.

5. Festive Shell-Stitch Pet Collar

What You Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn (in Holiday Red, Green, and White)
  • Yellow yarn
  • Crochet hook that matches your yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. First, make a long chain with red yarn. It needs to fit loosely around your cat’s neck (the pattern suggests using a multiple of 5 + 2 stitches).
  2. Work one row of double crochet (dc) stitches right into that red chain. Fasten off.
  3. Join your green yarn and work one full row of double crochet stitches, just like the red row. Fasten off.
  4. Now, join the white yarn and work a single crochet (sc) in the first two stitches.
  5. Create the scalloped edge: skip a stitch, work 5 double crochets all into the next stitch, skip another stitch, and then work a single crochet.
  6. Repeat that shell pattern all the way to the end of the row. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  7. To make the bow, use red yarn and crochet a flat, oblong shape. This is the base of the bow.
  8. Add a decorative border to the bow with white yarn, using a mix of sc, hdc, and dc stitches to shape the loops.
  9. Use yellow yarn to add a final row of slip stitches around the center of the white border for a nice pop of color.
  10. Pinch the flat bow in the middle and wrap the center with a separate piece of yarn. This forms the bow’s knot. Sew it tight.
  11. Securely sew the finished bow onto one end of the collar. This collar is tied on and is for photos, so please always supervise your cat and remove it afterward.

What You Need

Instructions

  1. Start the head with your main fur color. Make a magic circle (MC) and work 6 single crochet (sc) stitches into it. Place your stitch marker.
  2. For Round 2, increase in all 6 stitches (12). For Round 3, work [sc 1, increase] 6 times (18).
  3. Rounds 4 through 8 are simple, just work 1 single crochet in each of the 18 stitches.
  4. Pause here and embroider two cat-safe eyes using black thread. Place them between Rounds 4 and 5, about 3 stitches apart.
  5. Begin adding fiberfill stuffing to the head.
  6. To close the head, work [sc 1, decrease] 6 times (12). In the final round, work 6 decreases (6).
  7. Add a last bit of stuffing to make it firm. Fasten off, leaving a long tail, and use a needle to weave it through the final 6 stitches. Pull tight to close the hole.
  8. For the muzzle, use white yarn. Make a magic circle with 6 sc. For Rounds 2 and 3, just work 1 sc in each stitch. Fasten off, leaving a tail.
  9. To make an ear (you need two), use the main fur color. Chain 5, then sc in the next 4 chains (4).
  10. Turn, work 2 decreases (2). Turn, work 2 sc (2). Turn, work 1 decrease (1). Fasten off, leaving a tail.
  11. Assemble the head. Sew the two ears onto the top. Add a tiny bit of stuffing to the muzzle, then sew it onto the face, right below the eyes.
  12. Use pink yarn to embroider a small triangle nose on the muzzle. After that, use black thread to stitch three whiskers on each side.
  13. To create the hanger, thread a piece of ribbon through the top of the head. Pass it in and then back out one stitch over, and tie the ends in a secure knot.

7. DIY Christmas Kitty Crochet Tree

What You Need

Instructions

  1. First, crochet the main body of the tree using green yarn. Start from a small ring and work in rounds, slowly adding stitches so the tree gets wider as it gets taller.
  2. About halfway up, pause to embroider a small, sleepy face onto the tree using black thread. Once that’s done, continue crocheting the body to add more rounds to make it even taller.
  3. Once the tree body is finished, you can now begin to close the bottom.
  4. Do this by gradually decreasing the stitches in each round, which makes the opening smaller. Add stuffing as you go, before you close it completely.
  5. Next up, crochet all the individual decorations. This includes making two small green ears, a green tail, two yellow star pieces, two grey garlands, and a set of tiny red and yellow lights.
  6. Finally, assemble everything. Sew the ears and the stuffed star to the top of the tree, attach the stuffed tail to the back, and then wrap the garlands and lights around the body to complete your Christmas cat.

8. Mini Santa Hat for Cats Crochet

What You Need

  • Small amounts of red and white DK cotton yarn
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Optional: mini pom-pom or small bell

Instructions

  1. Begin with red yarn. Make a magic ring, work 5 single crochet (sc) into it, and pull the ring tight to close.
  2. Work one round even, just one sc in each stitch, to start shaping the cone. In the next round, increase by working 2 sc in the first stitch, then sc in the remaining 4 stitches.
  3. Continue alternating one increase round with one even round, which gradually widens the hat. Keep those stitches tight so the shape holds well.
  4. Once you reach 9 stitches around, switch to white yarn for the brim. Join it neatly at the end of the red round so the color change looks clean.
  5. Work two more rounds in white. Keep your tension a little looser on that very last round, as it helps the brim lie flat.
  6. To make the pom-pom, use white yarn. Create a small flat circle by making a magic ring, working 5 sc into it, and then joining with a slip stitch (sl st).
  7. Thread the yarn tail around the outer stitches of that circle and pull it to cinch everything into a small ball. Secure it and trim the end.
  8. Sew the pom-pom, or even a tiny bell, to the tip of the hat. Weave in all your ends neatly.
  9. If this hat is going on a crocheted cat figure, just make sure it fits snugly on the head without covering the eyes.

9. DIY Cozy Cat Sweater Crochet Pattern

What You Need

Instructions

  1. To make the turtleneck, grab your smaller 4.0 mm hook and the red yarn. Chain 11, then work 1 sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across (10 stitches total).
  2. To create that stretchy ribbing, we’ll alternate loops. For Row 2: chain 1, turn, and work 1 sc in the front loop only (FLO) of all 10 stitches.
  3. For Row 3: chain 1, turn, and work 1 sc in the back loop only (BLO) of all 10 stitches.
  4. Continue repeating Rows 2 (FLO) and 3 (BLO) until your ribbed strip is complete. The author has 47 rows, which creates a cuff to fit a neck circumference of about 9-10 inches.
  5. Fold the ribbed strip in half, bringing the first and last rows together. Working through the loops of both ends, slip stitch the seam closed to form a tube. Do not fasten off.
  6. Now, switch to your larger 5.0 mm hook. Chain 1, and work one round of single crochet evenly around the side edge of the cuff. Aim for one sc per row, for a total of 47 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
  7. For Round 2, we need to increase the chest. Chain 1, then work [1 sc in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch]. Repeat this pattern all the way around. You should have 58 stitches at the end. Slip stitch to join.
  8. For Rounds 3 and 4, just chain 1 and work 1 sc in all 58 stitches. At the end of Round 4, fasten off the red yarn and switch to your green yarn.
  9. With the green yarn, work 3 rounds of single crochet (Rounds 5-7). At the end of Round 7, switch back to red.
  10. With red, work 4 rounds of single crochet (Rounds 8-11). At the end of Round 11, switch back to green.
  11. Time for the armholes (Round 12). With green, chain 1. Sc in the first 5 stitches. Chain 7, and skip the next 7 stitches. Work 1 sc in the next 35 stitches. Chain 7, and skip the next 7 stitches. Work 1 sc in the last 3 stitches. Slip stitch to join.
  12. For Round 13, chain 1. Work 1 sc in each stitch all the way around, making sure to place 1 sc in each of the 7 chains you made for both armholes. This brings the count back to 58 stitches. Slip stitch to join.
  13. Continue working in the round, following the established stripe pattern (3 rounds of green, 4 rounds of red) until you have finished Round 32, or until the sweater reaches your pet’s belly.
  14. Now split for the back. Instead of joining, you will work in flat rows. Continue the stripe pattern, working back and forth across only the back stitches, leaving the remaining stitches open for the belly.
  15. Keep working these flat back-and-forth rows until the sweater is the desired length. The author suggests adding a final round of single crochet around the entire bottom opening to clean up the edge.

10. DIY Crochet Cat Toy

What You Need

Instructions

  1. Begin the first star with green yarn. Make a magic circle and work 5 single crochet (sc) stitches inside it. Join with a slip stitch (sl st).
  2. For Round 2, work an increase (that’s 2 sc) into every single stitch around. Join with a slip stitch (10 stitches total).
  3. For Round 3, work an increase in every stitch one more time, and join (20 stitches total).
  4. For Round 4, repeat this pattern: [work 1 sc in the next 3 stitches, then 1 increase]. Join when finished (25 stitches total). This completes the center circle.
  5. To make the first star point, chain (ch) 7.
  6. Working back down that chain, crochet these stitches in order: 1 slip stitch, 1 single crochet, 1 half double crochet, 1 double crochet, 1 treble crochet, and 1 double treble crochet.
  7. Attach the point to the base by skipping 3 stitches on the main circle, then slip stitching into the next 2 stitches.
  8. Repeat those last two steps (making the point and attaching it) four more times. This creates all five points.
  9. Fasten off the green yarn. Now, follow steps 1 through 8 all over again to make a second, identical star.
  10. Place the two stars together, making sure their “wrong” sides are facing inward.
  11. Join your red yarn by slip stitching through a point on both layers. Continue to slip stitch around the entire edge, which sews the two stars together.
  12. Before sewing the last point closed, pause. Add a small pinch of catnip or some light stuffing, then slip stitch the remaining opening.
  13. If you want a hanging loop, chain 25 right from your final stitch, then slip stitch back into that same spot. Fasten off and weave in all your ends.
