Finding efficient ways of cooling ourselves down is one of the first thoughts that cross our minds during summertime.
But have you taken a moment to think about your feline friend? How will they manage the heat and stay cool?
Hydration is a priority on hot days, but many cats are not big on drinking plain water, and this may put them at risk during warm seasons.
You should therefore think about other ways of cooling your feline, and this includes making frozen cat treats at home.
On top of being tasty and fun, these chilled treats are also packed with enough water to ensure your feline friend doesn’t get dehydrated.
In this article, we have compiled 15 DIY frozen cat treats with natural flavors your furry friend will love.
All recipes featured below are easy to make, and they require common ingredients that you may already have or can access at the shop anytime.
What are DIY Frozen Cat Treats?

DIY cat treats made at home consist of cat-safe ingredients mixed together, portioned, and then frozen to achieve a cool, refreshing treat for your cat.
Many contain basic ingredients such as tuna, cooked chicken, bone broth, canned pumpkin puree, or lactose-free yogurt, which then get poured into tiny molds or ice cube trays to freeze.
The best part about DIY freezing treats is that you can make them to suit your cat’s diet or dislikes, skip unwanted additives or preservatives, or even hide some extra supplements.
They’re especially wonderful in summer, because they help provide nutrition along with the cooling effect from the heat in a tasty, enjoyable format for your cat.
What You Need to Make Frozen Cat Treats

The best part about preparing DIY cat treats recipes is that you don’t need a high-tech kitchen to get the basics right.
Since we are making frozen treats, you’ll want to have access to a good freezer. Make sure it’s of good quality because you’ll want treats that are solidly frozen.
Second on the list of must-haves is ice cube trays or silicone molds. You’ll need these tools to shape out your treats according to the desired shape.
Silicone molds are also convenient because they give you an easier time when removing the frozen treats once done.
You also get plenty of choice when it comes to choosing silicone molds. We love those that have fun designs, such as paws, fish, and little hearts.
A good quality blender or a food processor will save you time when working with ingredients that require pureeing, such as fruits, fish, or yogurt.
One of the advantages of blending the ingredients first is that they always produce finished products that have even consistency with high digestibility.
If you’re making a small batch of no bake cat treats homemade, you may want to have a handheld immersion blender for convenience.
For recipes that require manual mixing of ingredients, make sure to have a medium-sized mixing bowl alongside a spoon or fork to make the work easier.
If you’re making popsicle-type frozen cat treats, we recommend getting silvervine sticks to make it better for your purring friend.
Once you have made your cat frozen treats, you’ll need to have freezer-safe containers or silicone bags for proper storage.

- 4 ripe bananas, mashed
- ¼ cup of tiny morsel cat treats or high-quality dry cat food
Instructions:
- Mash the bananas in a bowl with a fork or a hand mixer until they turn out smooth.
- Spoon the banana mash into candy molds or an ice cube tray.

2. Goat Milk Frozen Treats

Ingredients:
- 1 can of high-quality wet cat food
- An equal amount of unprocessed goat milk
- Optional: A few small cat treats for topping
Instructions:
- Empty the contents of the can of moist cat food into a bowl that can hold a medium quantity. Smooth pâté texture works best in making cat frozen treats.
- Using an empty can, scoop an equal quantity of goat milk and pour it into the bowl containing the wet food.
- Mix it to a point where it’s nicely blended and even in texture. It should pour smoothly but also be thick enough to set if you freeze it.
- Lightly oil an ice cube tray or a silicone ice tray with a little coconut oil. This process ensures that the chilled treats can easily pop out in the future.
- Spoon or pour the blend into each section of the molds, filling them close to the top.
- For a finishing touch, press a tiny, soft cat treat delicately into the center or top of each filled mould.
- Transfer the tray to the freezer and allow the treats to set for a period of at least 2 – 3 hours, or until completely frozen.
- Remove from freezer once solid, take out the tray, and pop out chilled bites. Keep them in a freezer-safe, airtight container or resealable freezer bag to preserve.
3. Berry Yogurt Meowsicles

Ingredients:
- 8 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt

- If using meat sticks as ‘popsicle sticks,’ cut them in half lengthwise and put them through the lower holes of each mold before filling.
- For vertical-shaped molds, put them in after filling and place a foil covering over each mold and cut a little ‘X’ in the center with a knife.
- Remove stems from strawberries and cut into small, bite-sized pieces then put chopped strawberries into a blender or food processor along with 4 tbsp Greek yogurt. Blend until smooth and creamy.
- Pour half of the strawberry mixture into your ice cube tray sections or popsicle molds.
- If a thinner base is desired, you can replace yogurt with cat-safe bone broth or milk simply pour a tablespoon of liquid in each mold before adding the fruit, then top with remaining liquid.
- Add to a blender, which has been cleaned, half of the blueberries along with the other 4 tablespoons of Greek yogurt. Blend smoothly.

Ensuring Complete Nutrition

As a responsible pet parent, you should always aim to provide complete and balanced nutrition for your cat’s health and longevity.
Before including any new ingredient in your DIY frozen cat treat recipes, we strongly recommend seeking a nod from your trusted veterinarian.
It’s your vet who knows your cat’s health conditions and any unique requirements they might have, possible allergies, or food sensitivities.
They may give you recommendations on what and what not to feed your cat to avoid stomach upset or for nutritional balance.
Since we use only a few ingredients when making frozen cat treats homemade, your vet may also recommend including some supplements to balance things out.
The most recommended ones include omega-3 fatty acids (usually from fish oil), which promote healthy skin and shiny coats.
Feline probiotics are also commonly recommended because they support a healthy gut by improving digestion.
Finally, we can’t talk about common feline supplements and forget to mention taurine, which is an essential amino acid. It helps with many functions including heart health, digestion, and immunity.
Keep in mind however, that frozen cat treats, as well as other kitty treats, should only constitute about 10 % of their daily calorie intake.
This will ensure your cat gets most of their nutritional needs from freshly prepared cat foods rather than quick snacks.
