Why a Good Breakfast Matters for Dogs

It Provides Steady Energy for Active Mornings
Following an entire night of eight to ten hours without food, your dog requires energy to restart its bodily functions.
A good morning meal for your dog will help restore energy by replenishing glycogen stores depleted during sleep.
Eating breakfast benefits active dogs who usually start their day with exercise or playtime right after waking up.
A balanced breakfast also supports steadier behavior. Early meals help dogs maintain calmer behavior throughout the day by reducing their tendency to beg or become restless.
The process of beginning food digestion early in the day is also helpful to our furry friends.
Dog meals that are packed moisture and fiber along with gentle carbohydrates help improve digestion especially in dogs with sensitive stomachs or irregular stools.
Breakfast for dogs that eat twice per day should be a lighter meal that sustains them until the next feeding without causing overfeeding.
It Can Be Tailored to Your Dog’s Needs
The appropriate breakfast portion and composition should match your dog’s age, weight, and physical activity levels.
Puppies with lots of energy require more morning calories compared to older dogs who spend lots of their time sleeping.
Breakfast for dogs that eat twice per day should be a lighter meal that sustains them until the next feeding without causing overfeeding.
There is no single breakfast recipe suitable for all dogs because a basic morning meal of quality ingredients greatly improves their energy levels, digestive function, and mood.
A healthy breakfast for your dog serves not only as a special treat but becomes an essential morning routinethat they will depend on every day.

4. Homemade Dog Food Breakfast

Ingredients
- 7½ lbs. chicken thighs, skin removed, bone-in
- 5½ lbs. lean ground beef
- 2 cups barley
- 3 lbs. sweet potatoes, cubed
- 1 lb. golden beets, cubed
- 2 lbs. carrots
- 2 lbs. broccoli
- 3½ lbs. apples, cored and quartered
- 3 cups tomato sauce (or marinara)
- 1 tablespoon salt or beef bouillon concentrate (optional)
Stock Ingredients
- 6 cups of water
- celery tops and heel
- 3 – 4 sprigs rosemary
- 20 peppercorns in cheesecloth
- veggie tops and tails
Instructions
- Add the chicken thighs and all stock ingredients to a large pot. Cover with water, plus 2 inches. Boil then simmer for 90 minutes.
- While the stock is simmering, brown the ground beef in another pot. As the beef cooks, break it up. Drain ½ the fat once it is halfway cooked, and then continue cooking until done.
- In a third pot, add the barley, sweet potatoes, and beets. Add enough water to cover, boil, and then simmer covered for 45 minutes. Let it stand for 30 minutes.
- Using a food processor, grind up the carrots, broccoli, and apples. It should be a fine meal. Mix into cooked beef, in order to par-cook the mixture and cool.
- Use a sturdy masher, and mash together the barley, sweet potato, and beets. Let cool while you strain the cooked chicken and stock. Allow the chicken to cool.
- Cool the stock also, preferably in an ice bath. Use a fat separator to remove the fat from the stock, reserving the chicken fat to add back to the meat mixture. Freeze stock for later.
- Remove bones and solids from the chicken, but keep the meat. Puree ½ the chicken with the barley mix.
- Layer the beef-veggie mix in a large pot, with tomato sauce, then chicken puree. Repeat the layering process.
- Once everything is layered in the pot, stir thoroughly. Taste the mixture and season lightly, if needed.

Ensuring Complete Nutrition

A homemade breakfast food for dogs that only meets their satiety should also meet their essential nutritional needs.
For dogs to be nutritionally satisfied, their breakfast needs to provide high-quality protein, good fats, complex carbohydrates, and enough fiber to keep their digestion moving smoothly.
A formula that many vets refer to is having half of the calories from animal protein, a quarter of the calories from slow-burn grains or vegetables, and the remaining calories from healthy fats.
This combination of ingredients aids the dog’s blood sugar regulation after a night’s fast and keeps them alert until their next meal is served.
As always, remember to consult with your board-certified vet nutritionist for advice on what and what not to feed your dog.
Your vet will evaluate your dog’s needs based on their current body conditions, medical history, age, size, and activity levels to determine what ingredients may work best for them.
In case of shortage, the vet may also recommend dog-specific supplements to boost your furry friend’s nutrition with their breakfast meals.
Advanced canine multivitamins, skin and coat supplements, mobility chews, and canine probiotics are some of the common types your dog may need.
