21 Dog Costume Ideas

1. Bumble Bee Dog & Cat Costume

This bumble bee costume strikes an excellent balance between fuzzy textures and festive flair for Halloween.

Made from soft faux fur and topped with shiny, iridescent wings, it will turn your dog or cat into a four-legged buzz of cuteness.

Features a separate headpiece with bobbly antennae and ear cutouts, which means your dog or cat won’t feel stuffed or overheated in this costume.

Velcro fasteners on the neck and belly will help keep everything in place for pets who wiggle or run around a lot.

Lightweight and available in a variety of sizes, this costume is particularly well-suited for medium breeds, around 10 to 22 pounds.

It’s a great option for pet Halloween photos, passing out candy, or trick-or-treating walks. If your pet has a broad chest or is headgear-averse, they may need a little time to adjust.

2. Ghost Dog & Cat Costume

This adorable ghost dog dress gives Halloween a playful and stylish twist.

Instead of the classic spooky sheet look, it comes in a soft white cotton-blend fabric with black stripes for a fun, eye-catching design.

The highlight is the cute tutu skirt, made with layers of black ruffles that add a festive flair and make your pup stand out at any Halloween party or trick-or-treat adventure.

The “BOO” print across the back brings the ghostly theme to life while still keeping things lighthearted and fun.

Designed like a dress, it’s easy to slip on and off, making it a great choice for pets who don’t enjoy bulky or restrictive costumes.

The breathable fabric ensures comfort, while the stretchy fit allows your dog to move freely whether they’re walking, playing, or posing for photos.

It’s also machine washable, so cleanup after the spooky celebrations is hassle-free.

3. Frisco Pumpkin Ball Dog & Cat Costume

We love how this pumpkin costume offers a fresh and modern twist on traditional designs through its smooth textured appearance.

The body is made from soft ribbed corduroy and has embroidered green leaves down the collar and sides for a bit of added flair.

This pumpkin costume isn’t quite as chunky or overstuffed as others, in case your pet prefers a thinner, less bulbous design.

The matching strap fits under the dog’s chin and holds the headpiece in place with minimal drama.

As it comes in multiple sizes and the pieces close with hook-and-loop fasteners, a comfortable fit can be achieved without it being too tight.

This is a great option for a pup that is game for headgear, but not one that fights being near the ears or on the face.

4. California Costumes, Stegosaurus Dog Costume

Turn your pup into a prehistoric star this Halloween with the Stegosaurus dog costume.

Designed with a scaly body, and blue pattern details, this outfit brings the mighty dino look to life in a fun and eye-catching way.

Unlike simple hoodies, this full-body costume features a padded design with stuffed 3D plates running down the back, instantly transforming your furry friend into a little dinosaur ready to stomp into the party.

The attached hood, complete with dinosaur face, adds an extra layer of charm while still being lightweight and comfortable for most dogs to wear.

The soft fabric construction also makes it comfortable for extended wear, so your pup won’t mind showing off their prehistoric style.

Whether you’re heading to a Halloween event, snapping themed photos, or just want to delight trick-or-treaters, this Stegosaurus costume guarantees your dog will stand out in the cutest (and scariest!) way.

5. Snail Dog & Cat Costume

Adorably silly, this snail costume is as cute as it is funny. A two-piece kit, it features a shiny textured shell to secure over your pup’s back with a headpiece that extends to their eyes.

The shell is secured with adjustable hook-and-loop closures at the neck and belly. Ideal for the uniquely silly pup, this costume might not be practical if your snail wants to run instead of crawl.

The headpiece comes with an elastic chinstrap and ear loops to help keep it in place without constant fidgeting.

Overall, it feels lightweight enough for pets who aren’t into heavy costumes while still packing a serious visual punch.

It’s ideal for Halloween parties, photoshoots, or anywhere you just want your pup to get tons of stares and snickers.

Just one word of warning: this slowpoke costume may suddenly pick up speed around the treats bowl.

6. Frisco Faux Fur Skunk Dog & Cat Costume

You can now have your furry friend decked out in this fur coat on Halloween and be the coolest, fuzziest skunk around (without the spraying).

This one-piece costume features long black faux fur with a large white stripe that stretches from the top of the hood all the way to the tip of the white, fluffy tail.

The oversized hood has no earholes for a fit that works for many head shapes without pulling on sensitive areas.

Hook-and-loop fasteners on the underside of the belly and neck area keep the costume in place while remaining easy to put on and take off.

The faux fur is thick and warm, but not too heavy, so your dog won’t overheat during a stroll or indoor function.

This is a wonderful option for pets that don’t mind some extra coverage and want to make a statement entrance. Be prepared for your dog to be stealing the show at the dog park.

7. Granny Dog & Cat Costume

You can now make your canine companion the cutest senior in the neighborhood with this gorgeous Grandma costume.

The dress is easy to use because you put your pet’s front legs through it and then secure the neck with the hook-and-loop fastener.

The ‘dress’ costume itself will vary in length with your dog’s height, which is part of the cuteness factor.

The wig may require a little tweaking to ensure it stays centered, but the fit is otherwise roomy and has plenty of range of motion.

Your pet will capture the highlight at any costume event and entertain neighbors during walks with this eye-catching look.

8. Rubie’s Disney Monster’s Inc. Sulley Pet Costume

Bring the magic of Disney to Halloween with this adorable Sulley pet costume.

Inspired by everyone’s favorite lovable monster from Monsters, Inc., this outfit combines bright blue plush fabric with purple spots to perfectly capture Sulley’s iconic look.

The costume features soft, fuzzy material for extra coziness, complete with a padded hood that has Sulley’s signature horns and friendly face.

The step-in design makes it easy to put on, while adjustable straps help keep it secure as your pup moves around.

We love that this costume balances comfort with detail, lightweight enough for pets who aren’t fans of bulky outfits, yet playful and instantly recognizable.

The soft construction also allows for freedom of movement, so your furry friend can walk, play, or pose for photos with ease.

Ideal for Halloween, costume parties, or Disney-themed fun, this Sulley pet costume guarantees your dog will steal the spotlight in the cutest monster way possible.

9. Spa Hair Curler Costume

Make your pet the protagonist of a salon sitcom show through this entertaining beauty parlor costume headpiece.

Modeled after an old-fashioned perm-in-progress, this design is padded for comfort and covered with yarn rollers.

Three panels make the headpiece soft and flexible, forming easily to various head shapes without obstructing vision.

Guided by the inbuilt earholes, it cinches easily; the hook-and-loop chin strap is adjustable for a secure fit that doesn’t budge, even with head-shaking pets.

Ideal for pets who resist full-body costumes but won’t object to some embellishment up top, this one’s surprisingly photogenic, as well as goofy enough to amuse even the non–pet people.

Best of all, this costume is super lightweight, easy to wear, and low-key; it won’t upstage the rest of your efforts.

10. Spider Pup, Dog Costume

Turn your pup into the creepiest (and cutest) arachnid around with the Spider Pup dog costume.

This standout outfit features a soft black body with eight oversized furry legs attached, creating the illusion of a giant spider skittering across the floor.

The costume is designed with plush fabric that keeps it lightweight and comfortable, while the fuzzy legs add a dramatic, eye-catching effect that’s sure to get laughs and gasps at any Halloween party or trick-or-treat night.

The step-in style and adjustable straps make it simple to put on and secure, ensuring the legs stay in place as your dog struts their spooky look.

We love that the design is both fun and wearable, pets still have full freedom of movement, so they can walk, run, or play without feeling restricted.

Whether you’re aiming for spooky or silly, the Spider Pup costume guarantees your furry friend will be the star of the night.

11. Dog Alien Costume

This fun and futuristic outfit features a shiny metallic silver cape that shimmers under the light, paired with a playful green alien headpiece for the ultimate extraterrestrial look.

The cape is lightweight and comfortable, designed to drape over your dog’s back without restricting movement, while the adjustable straps ensure a secure fit as your pup explores the galaxy, or at least the neighborhood.

The alien hat completes the cosmic vibe, adding a whimsical touch that’s perfect for Halloween photos or themed parties.

We love that this costume balances space-age style with pet-friendly comfort.

The cape design makes it easy to slip on and off, and its breathable fabric ensures your furry friend won’t overheat while showing off their UFO-inspired look.

12. Action Hero Dog Costume

Bring out your pup’s inner superhero with the Action Hero dog costume.

Designed to look like a muscle-packed hero suit, this outfit instantly transforms your furry friend into the star of the show.

The costume features a padded chest and arms to create a strong, comic-book-style silhouette, complete with detailed printing for that classic action hero look.

The attached cape adds the perfect finishing touch, flowing as your pup moves to give them a truly heroic presence.

With an easy step-in design and adjustable straps, this costume is simple to put on and stays secure as your dog runs, jumps, or strikes their best heroic pose.

The lightweight padding ensures comfort while still delivering that bold, muscular effect.

We love that it’s both playful and practical, comfortable enough for dogs who don’t enjoy heavy or restrictive costumes, yet eye-catching enough to make them the center of attention at any Halloween party or photo shoot.

Tools Needed

Materials & Supplies

  • Craft foam
  • Pom-pom
  • Velcro
  • ¼-inch elastic
  • Fun print fabric (scrap bin is great)
  • Heat fusible interfacing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Find a free kids’ party hat template online, then print it and cut it out. Put it on your craft foam, trace around it, and cut out the foam hat base.
  2. Hot glue down one edge of the foam. Roll the foam into a cone shape and hold for a minute or two until the glue sets.
  3. Put a dab of hot glue on the pointy top of the hat, and stick a pom-pom on it.
  4. Staple one end of the elastic to the inside of the hat. Slip it onto your dog’s head and mark the place that it needs to be pulled snug, then staple the other end.
  5. Measure your dog’s neck, then divide that number by 3.14 to find the inner circle of your collar. Draw the bullseye pattern for your pattern on paper.
  6. Trace your pattern onto your fabric and cut out your collar. If you are using interfacing, iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric with a hot iron (no steam), and let it cool completely.
  7. Cut a slit in the collar so it will open. Attach a Velcro strip along the edges to hold the collar closed around your dog’s neck.

Tools Needed

Materials & Supplies

Instructions

  1. Slice the foam ball into four even sections. The first piece will be the top bun, the second is the burger itself, and the third slice will be the bottom bun.
  2. Cut a circle of tan felt large enough to wrap around the top bun and glue it down, smoothing out wrinkles as you go. Use straight pins to secure the felt to the foam while it dries, if necessary.
  3. Repeat this step with another piece of tan felt and the third foam slice. Glue small white felt shapes onto the top bun to make sesame seeds. Set the buns aside to dry.
  4. Paint the middle foam slice brown to make a cooked burger patty. Let it dry completely.
  5. Prepare the toppings: Lettuce: Cut strips of green felt, scallop one edge with scissors, glue, and scrunch random parts to create a wavy effect. Pin in place.
  6. Cheese: Cut a large yellow felt square with points on the corners to drape over the patty.
  7. Tomato: Use a lid to trace and cut two red felt circles. Cut a smaller red circle and “C” shapes out of the felt to recreate a tomato texture.
  8. Pickles: Cut two green circles (lighter and darker shades). Add the white felt seeds and glue the pickles together.
  9. When all of the pieces are dry, start assembling your burger. Start with the bottom bun, then place the glued edges of the lettuce on top and the burger patty on top of the lettuce.
  10. Add the cheese, tomato, and pickles, and then top it off with the top bun, pressing down as you go to make sure it’s adhered well.
  11. Cut two strips of elastic about 7 – 8 inches long. Place the two pieces in a cross under the bottom bun and secure with glue. Pin it in place to dry.

Tools Needed

Materials & Supplies

Instructions

  1. Slip the child-size apron over your dog’s head and see how it fits. Pin the sides and bottom with safety pins if necessary to fit snugly on your dog’s body.
  2. Preheat the area where the coffee patch will go by running a warm iron over it for a few seconds. Place the patch and then press down hard with the iron for 30 seconds.
  3. Remove the iron and press the patch with your hand (or a book) for another 30 seconds to help set the adhesive.
  4. Cut a felt square in half to use as a name tag. Write your dog’s name with a white chalk paint pen and pin to the front of the apron.
  5. Tie the back straps gently around your dog when the apron is adjusted and decorated. You can add elastic or ribbon for additional hold, if needed, depending on your dog’s physique.

Tools Needed

  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Hot glue gun

Materials & Supplies

Instructions

  1. Discard the lid of the papier mache box. Cut 2 arched cuts into the bottom of the box so that it will rest on your dog’s back comfortably.
  2. Cut a slit on opposite ends of the box. The slit only needs to be large enough for the elastic straps to slide through.
  3. Cover the outer rim of the box with strips of brightly colored felt, hot gluing as you go, so the edges of the two felt sheets meet with no overlap.
  4. Stuff the felt top with polyfill. Sew a running gathering stitch across the felt, pull the thread to gather up the felt into a cupcake top shape. Tie off and cut off the excess thread and felt fabric.
  5. Cut strips of cardstock 3.5″ tall. Fold the cardstock pieces in an accordion fashion.
  6. Glue these pieces around the box like a cupcake wrapper, snipping the cardstock away from the arched cutouts as necessary. Do not glue over the elastic slits.
  7. Cut a wavy line from a different colored felt to use as the cupcake icing. Begin gluing at the bottom edge and spiral the felt upward toward the center top.
  8. Glue on small cut-out felt sprinkles to the top of the cupcake and slide a piece of elastic through each slit and fold over the ends.
  9. Sew the ends to the inside of the box. Ensure the elastic is long enough with enough stretch to go around your dog without being snug.

Tools Needed

  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Straight pins

Materials & Supplies

  • 0.5 yards of yellow fleece
  • 0.5 yards of black fleece
  • 12″ blue broadcloth or cotton (for wings)
  • 12″ medium-heavy iron-on interfacing
  • Matching thread (yellow, black, blue)
  • 1½” Velcro, about 1 foot (both hook and loop sides)

Instructions

  1. Cut out your pattern pieces based on your dog’s measurements. Here is where you can make fitting adjustments.
  2. The most important measurements are back length, chest girth, neckline, and underbelly. Add ½” seam allowance to all pattern edges.
  3. Cut two colors of fleece along the colored line as shown. Alternate black and yellow when you cut your fleece pieces.
  4. Sew the fleece pieces together at a ½” seam and top stitch the seam allowance down toward the tail.
  5. Pin together the chest and back pieces at the top and bottom seam edges at the armhole. Sew together the sections, open the seam allowances, and top stitch the seam allowances flat.
  6. Fold under the raw edges of the armholes, belly, and end of the back piece ¼” to ½” and stitch them down neatly.
  7. Sew the right sides together to make the collar and clip around the curves. Turn the collar right side out and top stitch. Pin to the neckline of the sweater, aligning the center points. Sew and top-stitch the neckline.
  8. If your dog wears a front harness, mark the center of the chest and sew a buttonhole through the sweater there for the harness loop, just above the armholes.
  9. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of two of the blue fabric pieces as shown and iron on the interfacing.
  10. Right sides together, put the interfaced piece and non-interfaced piece together and sew around, leaving the straight edge open. Clip curves and turn right side out, and top stitch.
  11. Fold the straight edge of each wing under ½”. Sew a strip of hook (rough) Velcro across that edge to cover the raw seam.
  12. Mark the back of the sweater where the wings will attach, between the armholes. Sew two strips of loop (soft) Velcro where you marked, leaving some room in between to sew an optional harness buttonhole.
  13. Optional: Sew a second buttonhole at the top center back of the sweater for a rear harness loop, following the same steps as above.

  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle
  • Iron
  • Straight pins

Materials & Supplies

  • Felt in 8 assorted colors
  • Red felt (for liner and straps)
  • 11 jingle bells
  • Hook and loop tape (Velcro)
  • Matching thread (red)
  • Fiberfill

Instructions

  2. Sew the two horn pieces right sides together, leaving the base open. Turn inside out, stuff with fiberfill, and set aside. Repeat until all three horns are stuffed.
  3. Arrange hat pieces in the color pattern you want, and sew the outer hat together, piece by piece, in a bowl shape. Repeat with red felt to make the liner.
  4. Hand-sew each horn to the outer hat, centering the seams and spacing each one about 1½” from the center. Tuck in the base of the horn fabric as you stitch.
  5. Cut 2 red felt strips, 1½” x 8½” for the hat straps and two 1½” x 3½” strips for the collar straps. Fold each in half lengthwise, sew, and then sew 1″ Velcro to one end of each strap.
  6. Put the red lining into the colorful hat bowl. Tuck ½” of a hat strap into each side, pin and sew ¼” from the edge all the way around. Cut off any loose threads or excess fabric.
  7. Print and cut four collar templates. Cut eight colored and eight red felt points using the collar point template.
  8. Sew colored points together in the sequence you want, then repeat with the red. Press open seams.

Soft, coiled craft rope can also be used to mimic dreadlocks. Complete the cool, festival-ready look with a pair of dog-safe sunglasses.

This costume is lightweight and is great for dogs who are okay with hats and accessories. Ensure that all components fit comfortably and are secure, without causing any restriction in movement or vision.

21. DIY Vacuum Cleaner Dog Costume

The pug dog has a humorous costume that features him as the top of an upright vacuum cleaner.

The costume has a lightweight, bulky construction, possibly of cardboard or foam, cut into a tube and painted black as the base of the vacuum.

We appreciate how this bottom part is attached with straps of velcro or elastic around the dog’s torso for comfort.

Plastic or flexible tubing or a hose would then extend from the back of the dog to a makeshift vacuum handle for the human ‘operator’.
