Method:

1. Cut all of the straight pieces for the gate on a miter saw or have them precut at the hardware store. Hold off on the angled cuts for the front X until later for the best fit.
2. Drill pocket holes along the inside of each of the back slats using a Kreg Jig configured for ¾ inch material. Drill one hole near each end and one in the middle.
3. Join the eight back slats together edge-to-edge using 1¼ inches pocket hole screws. Arrange all of them in a row as you go.
4. Join the two 1 x 6 verticals and two 1×6 horizontals together to form a rectangular frame for the front. Drill and attach each corner using pocket holes.
5. Measure and cut the pieces for the front X. Lay a 1 x 6 diagonally across the front frame to form one side of the X. Measure the angles and cut.
6. Fit the full X beam across the front to check. Cut and fit the two half-X pieces for the other side. Adjust angles as necessary.
7. Join the front and back layers by stacking the front frame on top of the back assembly. Secure all around the perimeter and across the X beams with 1-inch brad nails.
8. Fill all of the pocket holes with wood plugs and glue. Allow to dry, then sand flush. Fill the nail holes and any other visible gaps with spackle. Once dry, sand the entire gate smooth.
9. Paint the gate with a sprayer or brush. Apply one to two coats of chalk paint, allowing each side to dry completely before flipping. Be sure to cover the edges and top cap evenly.
10. Attach the hardware. Install the caster wheels in the bottom corners, the hinges on one side, and the handle on the front. Attach the sliding latch on the back side to secure the gate closed.
11. Hang the gate by holding it up in place against the doorway and marking where the hinges will go. Adjust as needed so the gate can swing freely and close.
